ABOUT BWINDI NATIONAL PARK

Bwindi National Park is located in south-west Uganda. It is situated along the Democratic Republic of Congo border adjacent to Virunga National Park on the edge of Albertine Rift. Spread over 331 sq Km, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is composed of two blocks of forests that are separated by corridor of forests. It has a rugged topography characterized by narrow valleys interspersed by rovers and steep hills. Elevation of the park ranges from 1190 to 2607 metres, the highest point being Rwamunyonyi Hill at the eastern edge of the park. The forest is dotted by aquatic habitats like swamps, creeks rivers and few trails.
The park has afromontane type of vegetation which shelters unique flora and fauna. The park is a home to over 120 species of mammals such as mountain gorillas, common chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey, African elephant, African green broadbill, and cream-banded swallowtail, black and white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, vervets, giant forest hog, and small antelope, side-striped jackal, African golden cat, and African civet. The park is also a bird watcher’s paradise. Birds found here include Western Green Tinker bird, African Wood Owl, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Red-throated Alethe, Fine-banded Woodpecker, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Handsome Francolin, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Regal Sunbird, Collared Apalis, Montane Oriole, and Shorttailed Warbler, Kivu Ground-Thrush, Chapin’s Flycatcher and African Green Broadbill.

WHEN TO GO ?

The best time to visit the park is from June to August and December to February. At this time there is much less rain, and forest trails aren’t slippery.
