ABOUT MANGLAJODI
Manglajodi is one of the oldest villages in Khurda district of Odisha. The area is primarily a fresh water zone connected through channels through the brackish water of Chilka lagoon. The wetland harbours over 3 lakh species of birds during the peak season. This region has is a significant global waterfowl habitat and is declared as an ‘Important Bird Area’.
Manglajodi represents a sustainable lifestyle which is on the verge of extinction. Manglajodi village comprises fishing communities. Local community is dependent on fish catch as it forms an important part of their diet.
Manglajodi had a dubious distinction of being a ‘poacher’s village’ as viallgers were involved in poaching birds on the large scale. But due to the sustained efforts of Chilka Development Authority and department of Environment, the situation has somewhat reversed. The poachers today assist the government in promoting local tourism like monitoring the bird population, co-ordinating with the forest department, assisting in research and taking tourists around on birding trips into the marshes.
The land also has spiritual importance. The two major festivals of the place are Danda Yatra and Shree Ram Navmi. Paika Akhada is a martial art form practiced by villagers on festive occasions.
Boat manufacturing units comprise the local industry of the village.
