SURROUNDING AREAS OF DELHI
Maddening crowd, heavy traffic and noise of blaring horns is what comes to mind when someone mentions New Delhi. Very few know that New Delhi and surrounding region also harbours rich biodiversity which is coming under threat due to unplanned developments and encroachments.
The area is a home to spurs of Aravalli known as Delhi Ridge. Aravalii are among the oldest mountain range extending from Gujarat, Rajasthan and through Haryana-Delhi. At present the Ridge is well regarded for being a green lung, controller of pollution, climate moderator, and groundwater recharge, prevents soil erosion besides being a bird and wildlife habitat.
The region has mainly moist deciduous forests with species such as haldu, mahua ,ken, reetha and kekar dominating the landscape.It shelters unique fauna including – Mongoose, Indian Hare, Indian Gerbils, Longeared Hedgehog, five stripped palm squirrel, Indian bull Frog, Nilgai, Rhesus Macaque, Mices, Foxes, Jackals. Birds found here are Barn Owl, Paradise Flycatcher and Shirker cuckoo, weaver bird or baya, grey shrike, babblers, mynas and sunbirds, pintails, shoveller, brahminy duck, common teal, bar headed goose, white eyed pochard.

The best time to visit is from October –November when the climate is moderate and one can enjoy to the fullest.
