ABOUT AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
Located in Kajiado County,Amboseli National Park is the one of the popular parks of Kenya. Established as a national park in 1974, it is also designated as the biosphere reserve. The park lies north west of Kilimanjaro and approximately 200 km away from Nairobi. The name ‘Amboseli’ is derived from Massai word meaning salty dust.
The park offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the highest free mountains of the world. Nature lovers can also explore myriad habitats ranging from wetlands dooted by sulphur springs, grasslands and woodlands. One can also meet Masai people who roam freely in the park and experience their culture.
Free roaming elephants are the major tourist attraction of the park. Other mammals found here include Cape buffaloes, impala, Masai lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, Masai giraffes, plains zebras and blue wildebeest, Gazelle, Spotted Hyena, Jackals, Wildebeest, Olive baboons. The park boasts of over 400 species of birds including MMagadascar pond heron. Lesser flamingo and shoebill.
WHEN TO GO ?
The best time to visit the park is between October and Janaury when one can watch migratory birds like red and yellow bishops, goshawks, buffalo weavers and palm nut vultures.
