ABOUT CHOPTA

Situated in Rudprayag district of Uttarkhand, Chopta is a pristine destination lying in the lap of Himalayas. It is located at an altitude of 2680 metres and offers spectacular views of Himalayan ranges such as Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. Due to its unsurpassed beauty, the place is known as ‘mini- Switzerland’ of Uttarakhand. It is a must-visit estination for nature lovers and adventurous trekkers. Since the place lies in the protected area, a journey of trekking takes one through enthralling forests offering surreal views of nature.The place is the starting point of the trek to famous Tungnath Mandir (Panch Kedar Temple) and Chandrashila Summit.
Surrounded by dense forests, Chopta supports rich biodiversity. Many varieties of lichens grow here on wood, soil and rock substrates. The forests here are a home to rhododendron, oak, deodar and Himalayan fir. Mammals found here include Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Wild Boar, Jackal, Fox, Jungle Cat, Marbled Cat, Himalayan Langur, Yellow-throated Marten, Pika, Himalayan Tahr, Ghoral, Barking Deer and musk deer. The region is a paradise of bird watchers. Many birds such as Himalayan Swiftlet, Crested Goshawk, Besra, Long-legged Buzzard, Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon, Black Kite, Red-headed Vulture, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Common Kestrel, Golden Eagle, Speckled Wood Pigeon, Snow Pigeon, Spotted Dove, Oriental Turtle Dove, Hill Partridge, Snow Partridge, Himalayan Monal, Kalij Pheasant, Koklass Pheasant are found here.

WHEN TO GO ?

The best time to visit Chopta is from April to June or October to December. In winter, Chopta offers splendid views of snow-capped mountain peaks.
