ABOUT DUDHWA NATIONAL PARK
Spread over districts of Lakhimpur-Kheri and Baharaich, Dudhwa National Park comprises Kishanpur Wildlife sanctuary, Dudhwa National Park and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. The park was established in 1958 as a wildlife sanctuary and was upgraded to national park in 1977 due to the efforts of Billy Arjan Singh. It was notified as a tiger reserve in 1987. The park shares eastern boundary with Nepal, which is defined to a large extent by Mohana River.
The area of the park falls under Upper Gangetic plain and is a vast alluvial plain through which various streams and rivers flow in south-easterly direction. The vegetation ranges from northern tropical semi-evergreen forest, northern Indian moist deciduous forest, tropical seasonal swamp forest and northern tropical dry deciduous forest. The main flora comprises sal, asna, shisham, jamun, gular, sehore and bahera. Major attractions of the park are tiger, swamp deer, sambar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, Indian rhinoceros, sloth bear, ratel, jackal, civets, jungle cat, fishing cat, leopard cat. Dudhwa National Park is a stronghold of the barasingha. Around half of the world’s barasinghas are present in Dudhwa National Park.
