ABOUT GREAT HIMALAYAN NATIONAL PARK
Located in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, the park was established in 1984. It is a high altitude national park with height ranging from 1500 to 6000 metres. The Park is situated at the junction of two major faunal regions: the oriental to the south and palaearctic to the north. The boundaries of the park are contiguous with the Pin Valley National Park in Trans-Himalaya, and Rupi-Bhabha Wildlfe Sanctuary in Sutlej catchment.
The Great Himalayan National Park is home to more than 375 faunal species. Most of the Himalayan fauna has been given protection under the high priority protection in the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The region shelters mammals like Himalayan goral, Himalayan tahr, bharal, common leopards, snow leopard, Himalayan black bears, Asiatic brown bears,musk deer,serow, barking deer. Birds found here include Western tragopan, monal, raptors, lammergeiers, Himalayan griffon vultures, golden eagles, long tailed minivets, yellow- bellied fantails, wallcreepers, white -collared grey winged blackbirds, laughing thrush, wren babbler, golden bush robin, black-throated thrush, grey wagtail.
