ABOUT GREATER RANN OF KUTCH

Great Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh located in Kutch district of Gujarat in India and Sindh province of Pakistan. It is one of the largest salt deserts in the world. The name ‘Rann’ means desert.Located between the Gulf of Kutch and mouth of Indus River, it can be accessed through a village called Kharaghoda in Surendanagar district.
The landscape of Great Rann of Kutch comprises flat lands of slaty clay and mudflats which hare filled with standing water during monsoon. The Luni,Rupen and Banas rivers meander through the area.
The unique ecosystem shelters rich biodiversity. Mammals found here include Desert cat, black buck, hyaena wolf, gazelle, blue bull, Chinkaras, Wild Boar, Falcons, nilgai, striped hyena, caracal, Ghudkhur. The region is also a bird watcher’s paradise. Various birds such as White eared Bulbul, Shrikes, Indian Courser Great Indian Bustard, Lesser Flamingo, Sarus Crane and Stone Plover are found here.

The best time to visit Great Rann of Kutch is from October to March when desert becomes dry and gives panoramic view of biodiversity.
