ABOUT JAMNAGAR

Located on the western coast of India, Jamnagar is the fifth largest city of Gujarat after Ahmedabad, Surat,Vadodara and Rajkot. Initally designed by Jam Saheb Shri Ranjitsinhji, it was subsequently developed by Jam Saheb Shri Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji in the 1940s when it was a part of princely state of Nawanagar. The city lies to the south of Gulf of Kutch. The city is a home to refinery of world’s largest pertroleum company, Reliance Industries.

Very few people know that the region is blessed with unique flora and fauna. India’s first Marine national park and sanctuary is found in Jamanagar district. The landscape of the sanctuary is dominated by coral reef system alongwith mangroves. These mangroves shelter a variety of avain species such as shikra, common myna, blyth’s reed warbler, moustached warbler, painted storks,herons, egrets, ibises, spoonbills,darters,flamingoes,avocets, ducks, terns, gulls and little cormorants. Besides mangroves, major flora includes sea grass and sea weeds, Saag, Sesam , Kheru, Limda. The region is a home to unique fauna like Coral lichen, Coral sponge, Green sponge, Puffer Fish, turtles, dolphins, crabs, Prawns, Sea anemones, Jelly Fishes, Starfishes and octopus. Morever, sea grass shelters unique fauna like Green Turtles, Olive ridley turtle and Leather back turtle.

Jamanagar also has Gaga wildlife sanctuary which is a home to variety of birds like Great Indian bustard, flamingoes, great Indian bustard, lark, partridge, and sand grouse
