ABOUT LAVA NEORA

Situated in Kalimpong subdivision of Darjeeling district of West Bengal, the altitude in the park reaches upto 10600 ft at Rachela Danda(highest point of the park), which forms a boundary with Sikkim in the north and Bhutan in north -east. This links Neora Valley National Park with the Pangolakha Wild Life Sanctuary in Sikkim and Toorsa Strict Reserve in Bhutan. The park is named after Neora River which flows through it.
The park has luxuriant vegetation because of it a major part of it remains inaccessible making it an adventure for trekkers. Created in 1986, the entire park is crisscrossed by streams. The park is dotted by sal trees, ferns and bamboo groves. The park harbours over 10 species of rhododendrons, some of which are about 300 years old. Yews, hamlock and wild strawberries also form the part of vegetation.
The park has managed to preserve its pristine state and supports a reservoir of biodiversity. Mammals found here include red panda, Asiatic black bear, barking deer, goral deer, leopards, leopard cat and Himalayan thar. The park shelters a variety of species of birds including Falcon, the Great Pied Hornbill, Himalayan Griffon, Redstart, Whistling Thrush, Golden Headed Black Finch and the Khaliz Pheasant.
A popular tourist destination Lava is only 10 kms away and is worth visiting. Located 22 km away is Loleygaon which is a paradise for trekkers.
