ABOUT LESSER RANN OF KUTCH
Little Rann of Kutch is one of the landscapes of the world that enjoy unique biodiversity. Located in Gujarat, the region covers an area of 4954 sq Km. It is also a biospehere reserve. The landscape of the place varies from saline desert plains,rocky and thron scrub, grassland to lakes and marshes. The region is characterized by a unique plateaus called bets.It can be regarded as an ecotone , a zone where terrestrial and marine habitats meet. The region enjoys profuseness of biodiversity. The region is a home to Asiatic wild ass sanctuary. Fauna found here include Asiatic wild ass, blackbucks, gazelle, blue bull, desert fox, jackal, jungle cat, hare, wolf and wild boar. The mizing of marine waters and freshwater discharged by rivers provide a home to myriad avian species like spotted and Indian sand grouse, Houbara bustard, Francolin partridge, desert wheatear, ducks, steppe eagle, short-toed eagle, vulture, bustard quails, imperial eagle, laggard falcon, flamingos, cranes, pelicans and storks. Great Indian bsustard is found in certain protected areas. Vegetation is mostly xerophtic in nature and found only in fringes and bets as saline mudflats don’t support any flora.
