ABOUT NAGARHOLE
Located in Mysore and Kodagu district of Karnataka, the Park derives its name from Cobra River that meanders through its centre. The park sprawls from the foothills of Western Ghats to Brahmagiri hills and south towards the state of Kerala. It was established in 1955 and declared a reserve under Project Tiger in 1999.It forms part of Nilgiris, one of the largest conservation areas in south India. Kabini River separates the Nagarhole National Park from Bandipur National Park. The park receives an annual rainfall of 1440 milimetres giving rise to luxurious vegetation.
The vegetation is mainly moist deciduous forest type with teak and rosewood as predominant species. Other trees found here include sandalwood and silver oak. Species of trees of the dry deciduous forest include crocodile bark, Lagerstroemia lanceolata (crepe myrtle), Indian kino tree, Grewia tilaefolia, rosewood and axlewood. The park also boasts of picturesque streams and valleys making it an attractive tourist destination.
Mammals found here include Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, Ussuri dhole, sloth bear, striped hyena chital, sambar deer, barking deer, four-horned antelope gaur, wild boar, Indian elephant, gray langur bonnet macaque, jungle cat, slender loris, leopard cat civet, mongoose European otter Indian giant flying squirrel Indian giant squirrel porcupine, golden jackal, chevrotain ,hare and pangolin. The park is a home to over 250 species of birds and is recognized an ‘Important Bird Area.’ Oriental white-backed vulture lesser adjutant greater spotted eagle and the Nilgiri wood-pigeon ,darters oriental white ibis,greater grey headed fish eagle, red headed vulture, blue winged parakeet Malabar grey hornbill and the white bellied treepie.

Reptiles –crab spider, crocodile, and Indian rock python, jumping spider, monitor lizard, python, signature spider, spectacled cobra and spider.
Trivia – The Park once formed the hunting ground of Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore.
