TSAVO NATIONAL PARK;

ABOUT TSAVO NATIONAL PARK

Spread over an area of 22000 sq Km, Tsavo National Park is one of the largest national parks of the world. It is split by a railway line into two divisions, namely Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest parks in Kenya, located South East of Kenya near the Town of Voi, Coast Province of Kenya.Tsavo West National Park is also located in Coast Province of Kenya. Of the two, Tsavo East National Park is bigger in size and has a flatter terrain.Its other features include Yatta Plateau and Lugard Falls. Tsavo West National Park is more mountainous as compared to its counterpart and is dotted with swamps, Lake Jipe and the Mzima Springs.
The parks are named after Tsavo River which along with Athi River merge to form Galana River inside the park. Both parks are considered as strongholds of biodiversity. Mammals found here include Masai lion, black rhino, cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, tree hyrax, impala, black-backed jackal, side-striped jackal, klipspringer, lesser kudu, leopard, lion, banded mongoose, dwarf mongoose, Egyptian mongoose, marsh mongoose, slender mongoose, white-tailed mongoose, black faced vervet monkey, Sykes’ monkey, fringe-eared oryx, clawless otter, ground pangolin, crested porcupine, cane rat, giant rat, naked mole rat, ratel, bohor reedbuck, black rhinoceros, serval, spectacled elephant shrew and bush squirrel. The parks are also a home to over 500 species of birds such as ostriches, kestrels, buzzards, starlings, weaver birds, kingfishers, hornbills, secretary birds and herons.

WHEN TO GO ?

Best time to go is from July to October when the season is dry. In the absence of rainfall,vegeation is sparse and seasonal watering holes are dry. In the search for food and water, wildlife relocates to more permanent water sources. As a result, the animals are found gathered in small areas. Hence one can view numerous species huddled together at one area.
